About the Institute
The Tamilnadu Institute of Labour Studies was established in the year 1973 by the Government of Tamilnadu and was functioning as a Government Department. Subsequently it was registered as Society under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act, 1975 on 8.10.1987 and started functioning as an autonomous body with effect from 1.4.1988.
This Institute is run by the Governing Committee under the Chairmanship of the Hon'ble Minister for Labour Welfare & Skill Development Department. As per the Bye - Law No.9 of Tamilnadu Institute of Labour Studies, Secretary to Government, Labour Welfare & Skill Development Department is the Vice-Chairman; other two official nominees of the Government are Secretary to Government, Finance Department and Secretary to Government, Higher Education Department. Besides the Commissioner of Labour, Director, Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health, other members are from the professional bodies and professionals in the area of personnel management; business, commerce, banking, labour, academic institutions, faculty members of the institute, etc. The Government of Tamilnadu sanctions Grants-in-aid every year.
Additional Commissioner of Labour of the Labour Department (or) Additional Director of the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health is posted on other duty as Director Tamilnadu Institute of Labour Studies and he/she is the Ex-officio Secretary of the Governing Committee. Now Additional Commissioner of Labour is posted as Director.
The main objectives of this institute are to:
- 1 Conduct graduate, Post-graduate and Ph.D., programmes in Labour Management and award degrees, diplomas and certificates for the same.
- 2 Impart knowledge and skills to prospective and practicing managers, administrators and office bearers of Trade Unions.
- 3 Organise training programmes, seminars, workshops and symposia on laws on Weights and Measures for the benefit of the consumers and enforcement officers.
- 4 Carry out research into matters concerning the personnel management and labour welfare.
- 5 Co-operate and collaborate with educational and other institutions in India and abroad by exchange of teachers and scholars and through joint programmes of research, training and consultancy.
